Cheap Clothes Rule / Fashion and Style Blog

Well, good old Wimbers is well and truly gripping the nation again (thanks to Andy Murray)  – and once again there are some pretty bizarre fashions on show. Not least, hot favourite Roger Federer‘s jacket he wears pre-match…………….

The star said: “It’s more contemporary while still looking clean and sophisticated.”

Nike would like Federer to add it is “a modern interpretation of a classic military silhouette from 1965” but they had to say it themselves.

Roger is not alone

Sadly, Roger is not the only sports star to have a fashion disaster. There are countless examples of on and off court/pitch style faux pas. What is it with sports stars and lack of style? – there seems to be a direct correlation between level of sporting talent and good fashion sense. Is it because these people put so much into their sports that they can’t think straight about what they’re wearing? or are they just clueless as to what looks good?

Off the top of my head, i can think of numerous examples of this phenomenon – Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Anna Kournikova, Ian Poulter, Tim Henman, The Williams sisters, Lewis Hamilton, Ashley Cole – i could name hundreds more………

Bucking the trend

There are however, a few sporting stars who have bucked this trend and have became style icons in their own right, namely Muhammad Ali, Tiger Woods, Andre Aggassi and Bjorn Bjorg (please let us know if you can name any more…….) – but they are few and far between.

What are your thoughts on this? – am i being unfair to these masters of the sporting domain?

Having already posted on Golf clothing, its safe to say that we are big fans of Sport here at CCR – and the gear associated with it. In the last few weeks a number of big sporting events have re-ignited our interest in sportswear. Firstly, there was the Olympics, where the GB team recorded a surprisingly impressive medal haul. There have also been major international football matches (World Cup 2010 qualifiers), with our national team Scotland losing to the mighty Macedonia – then bouncing back to beat Iceland. England also unexpectedly drubbed Croatia 4-1. Then, cycling legend Lance Armstrong announced that he is coming out of retirement and will race in the 2009 Tour De France – at 37 years old. Finally, our very own Andy Murray managed to reach the US Open Final, overcoming world number one Rafa Nadal in the Semi’s, only to fall to the mighty Rodger Federer at the final hurdle.

This fervent sporting activity has inspired us to come up with a list of a few of the most stylish sports people of all time. Read the rest of this entry »

{July 17, 2008}   Cheap Golf Chic

The 137th British Open Golf Championship Tee’d off this morning at Royal Birkdale in England. Having only played Golf a handful of times with the predominant feelings on each occassion being a mixture of frustration and bafflement, it is diifficult to get any enthusiasm to watch – however our dad will be glued to the screen, examining every stroke in minute detail in a desperate attempt to improve his handicap.

Here at Cheap Clothes Rule of course we are far more interested in the sartorial side of things and we will be keeping a close watch the fashion do’s and dont’s of each player. Many of the pro golfers have their own clothing line including Ian Poulter, Greg Norman and Annika Sorenstam. Read the rest of this entry »
