Who’s Watching the Watchmen?

For the uninitiated, Watchmen is the adaptation of the classic 1987 Alan Moore and David Gibbons graphic novel detailing the trials and tribulations of a group of superheroes. This epic, complex and multilayered story takes place in an alternative 20th century history and uses its characters and scenarios to reflect the anxieties of its time. Pretty deep stuff really. The book has transcended its genre and is considered a masterpiece of modern literature. It was in Time Magazine’s 100 greatest books of all time.

The brave man charged with ‘filming the unfilmable’ is Zak Snyder of 300 fame (This is Spaaaaarrrrtttttaaaaa). Early indications are that he has pulled off something extraordinary, but we’ll have to wait until March 6th to discover for ourselves. We’ll start talking about the clothes once you’ve watched the trailer…………

Watchmen Costume Design

Watchmen (both the book and the film) features some pretty spectacular costume design. For further detail on the origins on each of the characters, the newly released Watching the Watchmen Book features exclusive character-development artwork from Dave Gibbons. Now lets have a look at some of the characters.

Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley)

Rorschach is a uncompromising and complex, but he also happens to be an integral member of the Watchmen and is probably the most enigmatic of the group. We fully expect the Rorschach Trench Coat, Trilby and Ink-Blot mask to be one of Halloween 2009’s ubiquitous costume choices. Possibly because you could easily rattle this combination off for relatively little cash (which appeals to us greatly!)

Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson)

Looking like a slightly rustic Batman, Nite Owl has used his interest in Ornithology to develop his character design – he also has an extremely cool mode of transport – the Owl Ship.

Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman)

Fanboys over the world collectively swooned when megababe Malin Akerman was cast as Silk Spectre – mainly because they knew that she would be sporting an incredibly sexy thigh-high boots and one piece combo. The question is, are there any members of the female community out there brave enough to try this one out at Halloween?

Adriand Veidt (formerly the superhero Ozymandias) sports a classically influenced armoured suit and robe outfit, in homage to his hero Alexander the Great. He is believed to be one of the most intelligent people on earth.

Doctor Manhattan (Billy Crudup)

Since a nuclear accident moulded Manhattan into a Super Hero with unimaginable powers, he has spent most of his life swanning around naked with a fluorescent blue glow – not something that we feel is particularly easy to achieve as a look.
